Fitness Testing Newsletter: Results via Equations

Hi and welcome to the final fitness testing newsletter for 2010.  The topic for this newsletter is the use of equations in fitness testing, with examples of a few tests that have recently been added to Topend Sports. You would be aware of the commonly used equations for determining percent body fat, and there are a few others that are very useful. 

These newsletters have been coming less often as I am now concentrating on using Facebook to update my readers of the latest in fitness testing and sport science. Non-Exercise Fitness Test

For those looking for an easy testing option, the Non-Exercise Fitness Test is a simple (and very safe) test of VO2max as it determines your fitness level without you having to do any exercise, using a regression equation developed by Jackson et al. (1990). All you need is a rating of your physical activity, you age and sex, and either BMI or percent body fat. See more and the equation here:

Metabolic Rate

Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) are measures of resting energy expenditure, representing the minimum amount of energy required to keep your body functioning, including the heart, lungs and temperature regulation. Although BMR can be measured directly, it can also be calculated using the Harris-Benedict Equation, which requires height, weight and age values. Also, by multiplying the calculated BMR by an activity factor, you can determine how many calories are required each day to maintain body weight based on your daily activity level. Body Composition

There are many formula used in body composition assessment, such as formula for calculatingpercent body fat, calculating muscle mass and for calculating Body Surface Area.
