The World Mind Sports Games (WMSG) was introduced as a mind-version of the Olympic Games, held around the same time as the physical events. An event was held in 2008 and 2012, with competitions in bridge, chess, draughts, go and xiangqi (Chinese chess).
The first World Mind Sport Games was held in Beijing from October 3 to 18 in 2008, organized by IMSA (The International Mind Sports Association) under the patronage of GAISF (The General Association of International Sports Federations). The event, incorporating five mind-sports: Chess, Bridge, Draughts, Weiqi (Go), Xiangqi (Chinese chess), took place about two months after the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.
The same five mind-sports were contested as a part of the second games. In future games, Poker and several mathematical games were planned to be included.
At the first edition, China dominated the event winning 12 gold medals and a total of 26 medals.
The second edition of the event took place in Lille, France from August 9 to 23 in 2012. In this second edition of the games, chess was not included as a medal event. The Chinese athletes dominated Xiangqi winning all five gold medals and 13 out of the 15 total medals. 'Go' belonged to Chinese Taipei who won four gold medals and 11 of 15 medals.
The third edition of the World Mind Sports Games was scheduled to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2016 after the Summer Olympics, but it did not go ahead.
