South American Games for the Deaf

Little is known about the early editions of the South American Games for the Deaf. The second edition of the South American Games for the Deaf, was scheduled be held in Asuncion, Paraguay 2002, though it may have been held elsewhere. The third edition was scheduled to be held in Lima Peru in 2005, but eventually held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.



There was a resurgence in these games in 2014. An event called the South American Deaf Games was held in 2014 in Caxias do Sul, Brazil. The competition brought together deaf athletes from seven South American countries: Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Uruguay, competing in seven sports: soccer, futsal (indoor soccer), basketball, volleyball, handball, athletics, cycling, badminton, swimming, tennis, table tennis, beach volleyball, judo, karate and chess. In total, almost 700 deaf athletes competed. Brazil were very successful with 24 gold medals. Venezuela collected the most medals with 75.

The second South American Deaf Games were originally scheduled to be held in Barquisimeto, Venezuela in November 2018 but them was postponed to Cuenca, Ecuador in September 2019.
