This tournament has a similar group stage format to in 1996, though there was a dramatic change in the second stage, where a "Super Six" round replaced the quarter-finals.

The final was played between Australia and Pakistan at Lords, London. Australia made 133 runs in 20.1 overs for 2 wickets, in reply Pakistan made 132 All out in 39 Overs. Australia won by 8 Wickets.
