Sport Specific Athleticism Rankings

There are many factors which can determine success in sports. ESPN came up with ten skills that they determined make up athleticism. We revised and expanded this list to come up with our own 15 factors of success in sports. Each of the factors which make up these lists have been ranked, by either the expect panel at ESPN or the esteemed readers of this site. From these ranking lists we were able to determine which sports were rated highest for each of these individual components of athleticism.

  1. Aerobic Endurance
  2. Strength
  3. Speed and Power
  4. Flexibility
  5. Agility.
  6. Balance and Coordination — the ability to stay upright or stay in control of body movement.
  7. Body Composition — the distribution of muscle and fat, and body size such as height, lengths and girths.
  8. Reaction Time — the ability to respond quickly to a stimulus.
  9. Analytic and Tactical Ability — the ability of the mental system to evaluate and react to strategic situations (tactical ability).
  10. Motivation and Self Confidence— requires a motivated and focused athlete, with a level of belief in themselves
  11. Coping with Pressure — the ability to stay focused and perform up to expectations while under increasing pressure
  12. Skill and Technique — the specific skill set and technique required to be successful in a particular sport.

  8. Nerve — 'the fear factor'.
  9. Durability — able to constantly withstand physical punishment.
