Sporting Highlights for 2000

Here are the sporting highlights of the world of sport in 2000. The major event of the year was the Sydney Olympic Games.

Though NFL players and arrests are very common, most marquee players stay away from off the field problems. But on Jan 31st, Ray Lewis, a superstar linebacker of Baltimore Ravens was involved in a bar fight and was indicted on charges of murder for the stabbing death. Though Lewis was acquitted of all charges, many believe that he got away with it.

Tiger Woods won his first US Open and did it in style with a 15 stroke lead over the runner up. That win still remains as the biggest winning margin in any major championship. Tiger Woods also won the PGA Championship that year to become the first-ever in the last four decades to win three majors in a calendar year.

Pete Sampras who dominated Wimbledon won the title again for the seventh straight time. At that time, he was the only player to have won the Wimbledon seven times. Roger Federer would later match that feat in 2012.

Minor scuffles and football fans turning rowdies during games are not that uncommon. But in a situation that got out of control during a World Cup qualifying soccer match in Harare between Zimbabwe and South Africa, police had to fire on some unruly fans which in turn set off a stampede and killed twelve people.

In the Tour de France, Lance Armstrong won his second consecutive event, though in 2012 he was stripped of all his wins after doping allegations were proven correct.

The 2001 Laureus World Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards went to golfer Tiger Woods and Marion Jones, though her award was later reversed after she admitted using performance-enchancing drugs - no replacement winner was named.
