Sporting Highlights for 1984

Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1984. The major sporting event of the year was the Olympic Games, held in Los Angeles. Winter Olympic Games were held also held this year, in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia.

The Winter Olympics went as usual with East Germany finishing first on the medals table. On a funnier note, the Olympic flag raised upside down remains one of the major highlights of the games. The Summer Olympics which was boycotted by the ex-Soviet Union, remains most memorable for the achievements by Carl Lewis who won four gold medals.

Martina Navratilova's 54-matches winning streak came to an end in a big upset against Hana Mandlíková. However, Martina would start another winning streak including three grand slam wins that would go on for 74 matches and to this date remains as the longest ever.

Ivan Lendl won his first grand slam by defeating John McEnroe in French Open. The eight time grand slam winner won the French Open and got back on Ivan in the US Open for his final grand slam title.

Most basketball fans love high scoring games and this one exactly fits the bill. Denver Nuggets 163 defeated San Antonio Spurs 155, in a game that ended in regulation time. The 318 total point is the highest total score ever in regulation time of an NBA game which stands to this date. In a very historical move, the Chicago Bulls selected Michael Jordan in the National Basketball Association.
