Sporting Highlights for 1975

Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1975.



Australian John Newcombe defeated three time grand slam winner Jimmy Connors to win the Australian Open for the second time and his seventh and final grand slam title. Bjorn Borg successfully defended his French Open title and Arthur Ashe won his third and final slam at the Wimbledon after five years of grand slam drought.

Evonne Goolagong Cawley won the Australian Tennis Open for the second straight time which was a part of her three-peat. Chris Evert continued her previous year success by winning two more grand slam titles. Billie Jean King won the Wimbledon for the 6th time which was her 12th and final grand slam title.

It was the year of the first ICC Cricket World Cup which was held in England. Eight nations participated in the event in which the West Indies defeated Australia to win the cup.

Jack Nicklaus won two majors, Masters Tournament and PGA Championship, which was the fourth time he would win two majors in the same year. He would repeat the feat again in 1980 for the fifth and final time. Tom Watson won the first of his seven majors at The British Open and Kathy Whitworth won her sixth and final major at the LPGA Championship.
