Sporting Highlights for 1957

Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1957.



Shirley Fry Irvin won the Australian Open for her fourth and final grand slam title. Though she had to settle with four career titles she won one of each grand slam. Althea Gibson won two grand slams that year, Wimbledon and the US Open as a part of her five grand slam titles career. Ashley John Cooper, a four-time grand slam winner, won the Australian Open for the first time. Lew Hoad defended his Wimbledon win from previous year for his fourth grand slam title.

Golfer Bobby Locke won the Open Championship for the fourth time in his career. Locke though, was never able to transcend his success beyond The British Open.

In women's golf, the year belonged to multiple major winners. Patty Berg won the Women's Western Open and the Titleholders Championship for 13 and 14th major. Louise Suggs won the LPGA Championship for her 10th major and Betsy Rawls won the U.S. Women's Open for her fourth major. Suggs became the first woman to capture the career Grand Slam.

Juan Manuel Fangio, the second most winningest driver in the F1 with five driver's championship, only second to Michael, won the championship for the fourth straight year.

Jacques Anquetil of France, one of the three riders ever to win the Tour de France five times won his first race that year.
