Richard Savitt won his first grand slam title taking the Australian Open, the first grand slam event of the year. He also won the French Open that same year for his second slam. Ben Hogan won the Masters Tournament for his fifth major title. He continued his success on that year with a win at the US Open which was his sixth major title. Though the following year was not a very successful one, he won three straight majors in the year after to finish his career with nine major titles.

Hugo Koblet became the second Swiss, behind Ferdinand Kübler who won the previous year, to capture the Tour de France championship. He won five stages during the race and won the tour by a 22 minute margin. That was however the only time Koblet won at the event.
