Sporting Highlights for 1933

Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1933.

The French domination at the Tour de France event continued for the fourth straight year. Georges Speicher took three stages and won the race by a margin of four minutes.



Helen Wills Moody won the Wimbledon for the sixth time. She also won the event two more times in the future for a total of eight Wimbledon titles, second only to Martina Navratilova who has nine.

Jack Crawford won the Australian Open for the third straight time. He also won the French Open and the Wimbledon that year for his fifth career grand slam title. He took the Australian Open again a year later to finish his career with six slam titles.

Gene Sarazen won the PGA Championship again, nine years after his back-to-back wins at the event. It was Gene's sixth major title. He took his seventh and final major title at the Masters Tournament a year later to finish his career with seven titles and a distinction to have won all the four majors at least once. The Golf US Open was won by an Amateur player for the last time, Johnny Goodman. Denny Shute won The Open Championship for his first major title. He took the PGA Championship twice in the future to finish with three major title wins.

June Beebe won the only women's major tournament, the Women's Western Open, for the second time.
