Sporting Highlights for 1920
Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1920.
The major event of this year was the Olympic Games held in Antwerp Belgium, contested by 2,626 athletes from 29 countries. The winter games was not inaugurated at this time and some of the events that are currently part of the winter games were contested as part of the summer games. The United States dominated the games winning 41 gold medals and 95 total medals. Sweden and Great Britain finished in second and third place with 64 and 43 total medals.
Belgium rider Philippe Thys won the Tour de France for the third time in his career, this time by winning at four stages, the most number of stages he had ever won. His three wins at the event has been matched or surpassed by only six other riders in the history of the event.
Bill Tilden won the Wimbledon and the US Open for his first and second career slam titles. Pat O'Hara Wood won the Australian Open, also for his first slam title. After that year, Tilden and Wood had contrasting careers, Wood won only one other slam whereas Tilden went on to win eight more.
In women's tennis Suzanne Lengle and Molla Bjurstedt Mallory took the Wimbledon and the US Open titles respectively.
Also this year, the National Football League (NFL) commenced play, as did the National Negro Baseball League.
