Sport in Eswatini (Swaziland)
Eswatini, formerly 'The Kingdom of Swaziland', is located in southern region of Africa. Known as one of the smallest of the African countries, Eswatini’s terrain is unusually diverse. As with most of Africa, Eswatini has been heavily influenced by European culture which bled into their preference in sports.
Football is the top sport in Eswatini their National Football Association is affiliated to both CAF and FIFA. Without much significant financial backing, the Sihlangu Semnikati, the national football team of Eswatini, have not made much dent in the international stage and their best performance so far is a COSAFA Cup semi-final finish. This however never dampens the country’s love of the sport.
There is also quite a following for other team sports like rugby and cricket. In 2007, their National Cricket team became part of the International Cricket Council as an affiliate member. Individual sports are also quite popular in Eswatini like golf, squash, tennis, lawn bowls, hiking, water sports, horse riding and fishing. Golfing in Eswatini is considered quite a trip because they have a good number of courses including the Royal Swazi Spa Golf Club as well as the Nkonyeni Golf Estate, two of the best championship-standard 18-hole courses in Africa.
