Fat Free Myth

If it is fat free, you can eat as much as you want — true or false?

THIS IS FALSE

  • Generally, a calorie is a calorie, irrespective of whether it comes from fat, carbohydrate or protein. So something low in fat is not necessarily good for weight loss if it has a high level of sugar.
  • Also, fat makes you feel full, so if you don't eat enough of it you may find yourself constantly hungry and you may end up consuming more calories than if you had eaten something with fat in it to begin with.
  • Fat free can still be a good choice, a diet high in fat is not good for your health. Being fat free is not always good either, as often other poor nutrients such as sugar and salt are added to these types of products to improve the taste. You need to read the label closely.
