Professor John Barrow is the author of “100 Essential Things You Didn’t Know You Didn’t Know About Sport“, and this is his lecture when he launched the book. The book and the video are full of fascinating things to do with maths and sport. Very interesting for anyone with an interest in biomechanics.

Gliding Demonstration Sport at the 1936 Olympics

February 20th, 2014 · Unusual

There are many unusual sports that have been part of the Olympic Games as demonstration sports. Gliding, or aeronautics, was demonstrated in 1936, and also a gold medal awarded for Swiss Hermann Schreiber for a flight across the Alps in 1935. The IOC were ready to add this as an official sport in 1940, only for the Olympics to be cancelled by the outbreak of war. There was plenty of aeronautic skills shown in the skies during the war, but unfortunately it was never again considered for the Olympics. See more about Aeronautics at the Olympics.

Polar BodyAge and OwnIndex Fitness Testing System

July 25th, 2013 · Testing

The Polar BodyAge fitness assessment determines a single universal assessment unit with just a few simple tests – the physical body age. This promotional video goes through an actual test showing off all the features. It is a pretty cool universal system with all the tests integrated and results and fitness programs produced from the results. I particularly like the sit and reach test, using a cable system built into the unit. See more on the Polar BodyAge assessment, and the Polar Fitness Test (OwnIndex).

Hantis Championship Highlights from 2010

April 8th, 2013 · Unusual

Here is a highlight video of the Hantis Players’ Championship in 2010. It is a sport dreamed up by a few US high school students. It is a sport for everyone – anyone can play with minimal cost outlay (you just need any four tables and a ball). It is a new sport to me, though very impressive. These players have great skills, and it is exciting to watch – this may be a new sport that really takes off. See more about Hantis.
