Vertical Jump Laser System
-
About: This system calculates vertical jump height by measuring the time from when the feet leave the floor to the top of the jump at the peak height of the raised arm. From the time the jump, height and leg power can be calculated.
-
Instructions: the subject stands on the mat in the plane of the infrared laser. When the equipment is ready, the subject jumps vertically, reaching upwards with one arm as high as possible. Timing starts when the infrared laser at ground level becomes unbroken, and finishes when the athlete jumps and breaks the upper laser with his hand. Another system using a laser is replacing the wall and chalk method, and having the laser at the wall level. The height at which the laser beam is broken is measured.
-
Disadvantages: The laser device is more expensive than most other vertical jump equipment, and is not very portable. Without a mark on the wall to aim for and motivate the subject, jump height using this method can be lower.
-
Advantages: Unlike the jump timing mat, this system does not have the possible error of the feet being pulled up at landing.
