Surfing Equipment - The wetsuit

Surfer heading out to the break at Anglesea Surf Beach, AustraliaA wetsuit is essential for anyone wanting to spend lengthy periods in cool water. It is a body covering which allows a small amount of water under the surface against the skin. This water is trapped inside the suit and is warmed by body heat. The suit material also acts as insulation between the warm layer of water inside and the cold water outside.

History

There is some debate on who invented the wetsuit. So sources quote Jack O'Neil who founded the famous O'Neil surfwear brand, while other argue that it Bob and Bill Meistrell of the company Body Glove.

The modern wetsuit

Modern wetsuits are made of neoprene, which provides some thermal protection, and are lined with a nylon fabric to make them easier to pull on and off.

Instructions

A close fit for the wetsuit is essential for it to work properly. If the suit is too loose then cold water will simply flush through it and offer no protection to the wearer.
