Rogaining

Rogaining is a sport which involves cross-country navigation over long distances. It also involves route planning using different types of maps between checkpoints. Rogaining was developed in the 1940’s in Australia. Some elements of rogaining were developed by the Melbourne University Mountaineering Club.

The word ROGAINE was formed and was derived by the three founders: ROd Phillips, GAIl Davis, and NEil Phillips.

This sport is played by two teams with five members each. They have to reach a certain number of checkpoint in a specific period of time. Each checkpoint corresponds to a certain score, teams may develop a strategy, for example, visit the checkpoints with the highest scores first.

The teams cannot travel using any vehicle, they must travel by foot. They navigate using maps and compasses. Some regaining games last up to 6, 8, 12, and 15 hours. A rogaining championship may last up to 24 hours. The are other variations of rogaining: metrogaine, cycloogaine, snogaine, and paddlogaine.
