A racing season consists of several races in tracks around the world. The layout of the course differs for each track. Races are conducted for two days, where on the first day riders qualify for starting position on the grid, and the actual race is held on the next day. Each race involves a fixed number of laps around the track, where the rider to cross the finish line first is the winner. Riders are awarded points based on the finish position in each race. The rider with the most points at the end of the season is the winner of the championship.

The major competitions conducted on closed public roads are the International Road Racing Championship, and the Duke Road Racing Rankings series.
