Cowboy Action Shooting

Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) is a shooting sport that involves shooting at targets with a variety of guns that were typical of the late 19th century. The sport originated in the United States and is currently practiced in a few other countries as well.

In competitions, matches consist of several stages, with each stage presenting a different scenario that are typical of the old west. Shooters have to carry four guns for a mach (two revolvers, one shotgun, and one rifle). Each stage requires up to 10 revolver rounds, up to 10 rifle rounds, or up to eight shotgun rounds. Some stages will restrict the use of only one or two types of guns. Targets used are usually steel plates that get knocked down when hit.

Most matches are time based, where each shooter completes the stages individually against a clock. In each stage, targets have to be shot in a specific order. For each missed target 5 seconds, and for targets shot out-of-order 10 seconds, are added to the shooters final time as a penalty. After all deductions, the competitor with the fastest time for all stages combined is declared as the winner.

The most popular competitions for CAS is the National and World Championships where over 700 competitors take part.
