Czechoslovakia existed as a sovereign state in Central Europe between October 1918 and January 1993. Players from this region now represent the countries of Czech Republic and Slovakia.

They had reached the Final in 1934, where they lost to Italy 2-1 in extra time after leading 1-0.

Prior to 1998, Czechoslovakia had qualified no less than eight times and twice Czechoslovakia had to settle for the runners-up trophy.
- The Czechs also reached the final in 1962 and faced Brazil. Once again, Czechoslovakia took the lead but once again they succumbed as Brazil claimed a 3-1 victory.
