The Kingdom Games
The Kingdom Games was a multi-sport event held every two years. Participants of The Kingdom Games were countries that are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The first Kingdom Games were in 1965. The aim of the event is to bring each nation closer to one another. During that time, only the Netherlands, Suriname and Netherlands Antilles took part in it.
In 1975, Suriname became independent and stopped participating in the Games.
From 1979 to 1983, only the Netherlands and the Antilles took part in the Kingdom Games and after that, the event was canceled.
After so many years without the Kingdom Games, in 1995, they reopened the event again with the same aim. Until then, only the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba participated in the event.
Some of the sports being competed in the Games are baseball, bowling, football, judo, softball, swimming and tennis.
It is said that the strength of the Netherlands team is adjusted to the strength of the other teams because generally the level of the Dutch team is higher compared to the other participants. The Dutch usually join with regional teams or younger athletes to close the gap in quality.
The 2011 Games were canceled due to the political situation surrounding the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles.
The event has not been held since.
