  • The Republic of Singapore joined the Commonwealth in 1965.

  • The name Singapore derives from the Sanskrit Singa Pura, 'City of the Lion'.

  • Singapore is situated in South East Asia and lies just north of the Equator. It is seperated from Peninsular Malaysia by the narrow Johor Straits. See map of Singapore.

  • Singapore has taken part in every Games since their debut in 1950. The Manchester Games in 2002 was their best ever appearance in terms of medals, four gold (badminton and table tennis) from a total of 13 medals.
