Work History

After graduating from Curtin University in Western Australia, I moved to Darwin and worked for three years consulting as a sports dietitian at the Northern Territory Insititue of Sport, and running my own private practice. From there I moved to Canberra to work at the Australian Insititue of Sport for over 2 years. I am currently working as a consultant dietitian in Melbourne.

Current Position: Consultant Dietitian

  • Services provided to local sporting groups, health oriented groups and corporate groups.
  • Consultant Dietitian for Tenpin Bowling Australia. In this role I have presented at the Asian National Tenpin Bowling Symposium in Hong Kong plus annually to coaches and national squad members.

2003 Responsibilities:

1. Management of the nutrition support programmes for Men’s and Women’s AIS Basketball programmes, which involves:

  • Coordination of all nutrition services for these teams, including the planning and implementation of education sessions, theory and practical, on topics such as recovery nutrition, supplement usage, bulking up, weight/fat loss, fluid balance monitoring, shopping excursions and cooking classes.
  • Individual consultation to all athletes including food diary analysis, assistance in diet planning, advice on particular supplements.
  • Attendance at training sessions and games.
  • Attendance at service provider team meetings.
  • Regular contact with the coaching and other support staff to ensure smooth running and success of the nutrition program.

2. Management of AIS camp based sports: Rugby, Rugby League, Winter sports, Women’s Cricket and the Alpine disabled programs.

  • This is a similar coordination role as above but at a lower level of contact, due to the nature of these programs. However this requires greater prioritisation for each group depending on the needs of the team and the athletes.

3. Coordination of nutrition services for sporting and commercial camp based programs visiting the AIS. Groups included National Sporting Organisation athletes in Judo, Swimming, Soccer, Athletics, Motor sports, plus coach and school groups.


2004 Responsibilities:

Sports Nutrition

  • Cordination of the AIS Swimming Residential Program including travel to an International Swim Meet, coordintation of food provision at all National Swim Meets and individual consultation to all athletes.
  • Ongoing management of AIS Winter Sports Camp Based Program including travel and servicing at on-snow camps. This is a National team, including mogul skiers, snowboarders, aerial skiers, short track speed skaters and alpine skiers with a disability.

Food Service Dietitian

  • Menu Planning for a four-week cyclic menu catering for over 200 athletes at the AIS.
  • Regular consultation with contracted catering Chef’s to maintain high quality and appropriate food service.
  • Regular dealings with food company representatives to cordinate best possible food supply.
  • Management of all on-site AIS food provision to ensure appropriate nutritional balance.
  • Cordination of all travel nutrition supplies for teams travelling nationally as well as internationally.
  • Managament and upkeep of the AIS Sports Nutrition Department nurtition analysis program, Foodworks, including updating with all new avialable foods and recipes.

Ongoing Responsibilities

  • Attendance at regular professional develpoment sessions, nutrition journal club and physiology lectures.
  • Research experience:
    • Major planning, coordination and involvement in a research project with Louise Burke; ‘Carbohydrate supplementation during a half marathon’.
    • Planning and implementation of a fluid balance research project comparing flow rates of different water bottles and how this affects hydration status of athletes.
    • Involvement in other Nutrition and Physiology departmental research.

Owner/Manager Nutrition Works 2000-2002

This is a busy private dietetic practice based at Nightcliff Sports Complex, NT.
The business specialises in sports nutrition and weight management. However, it also covers a diverse range of work including: clinical, sports, catering and community dietetics.
Responsibilities

1. Sports Nutrition:

  • Consultant dietitian to the Northern Territory Institute of Sport involving planning and implementation of sports nutrition programs. This included screening and analysis of athletes’ diets, group education and practical sessions, plus individual counselling. Sports that I worked with were: Australian Rules Football, Rugby, Rugby League, Swimming, Netball, Tennis, Judo, Cricket, Hockey, Touch Football, Basketball, Tenpin, Motocross, Lawn Bowls.
  • Assistance in several research projects conducted at the NTIS, mainly with data collection and in discussion of results. These studies have had a focus on hydration.

2. Clinical Dietetics:

  • Regular clinical consultations at Darwin Private Hospital, geriatric clinical nutrition at Nursing Homes, doctor’s referrals of general population and the Defence Forces.

3. Community Dietetics:

  • Presentations on a variety of topics, regular editorial sections in the local NT News, and local radio interviews.

4. Catering Dietetics:

  • Involvement in assessment and planning of menus for Nursing homes and Child Day Care Centres.
